With the release of their self titled EP, Dylan Daniels as Baby D brings a new feel to a classic genre. Lush with addicting hooks, edgy vocals, and a punk attitude, the record boasts the aesthetic of alt rock anthems. Though the songs are diverse, there is a glue that holds them together much as a concept album might; emotional transparency and authentic style.
The first single, “Not Your Fantasy” is an instant alt punk classic. Complete with high energy breakdowns, a heavy chorus, and a genuine 70’s punk style, the song seems to breathe and build as it plays on.
“The song is about the struggle to be taken seriously as an artist in a straight male dominated industry, not compromising for others expectations, not wanting to be ‘good for a girl,’ just wanting the same respect any other dude would get. It’s a bit of an anthem and it reflects the attitude of the rest of the album, giving a glimpse of what you’re going to get into” explains Baby D of their single.
Although the single speaks volumes for the EP, to get a real understanding of where Baby D is coming from, the record should be heard in its entirety.
“The EP has been quite an evolution in my songwriting since my writing in Th’ Rattletrap. It’s different writing for myself instead of a band. I’m not trying for a certain sound, just exploring the one I have. I was able to get more adventurous with my songwriting, ballsier, and have a lot of fun with it. The autobiographical nature of the lyrics is typical of my music, as well as the vocal emphasis. It’s musically guitar heavy, raw and dynamic. Songs are emotionally charged punk rock and that’s my wheelhouse”
The name Baby D was born out of Daniels’ alter ego in their band Th’ Rattletrap from Sioux Falls, SD. The band started in 2013 and is still going strong, but finding an individual sound became an important new undertaking, and the EP was born. The debut self titled release is Baby D (Dylan Daniels), Phil Thoendel, and Sasa Damjanovic. The current Line up is Baby D, Ally King, Neil Stach, and Dylan Olson.
Having shared the stage in Th’ Rattletrap with the likes of The Coathangers, Twin Peaks, Dune Rats, Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers, Michael Rault and more, Baby D is not new to the stage, and not stopping anytime soon.
The Baby D EP is now available for streaming and downloads on most major digital outlets and the band is planning a tour for this summer in support of their release.
